Scutellum flabelliferum (GOLDFUSS)

Ahrdorfschichten, Lower Middle Devonian

Gees, Eifel (Germany)

With of the cephalon about 3.1 cm

Scutellum is a trilobite of the deep regions of the ocean. The fragile and flat animal sailed through the open sea. Its fossilized remains thus are hardly to be found.

Our Trilotarium shows a complete „molting shirt“ that can be recognized by the opened sutures of the shell, mainly in the head´s region. For molting the grown animals obviously came down to the ground, hatched and left back the old too small skin. Trilobites grew and molted all over their live just as other arthropods for example spiders do still today.
